Cristiano Ronaldo wins FIFA Men's Best Player award

After clinching the Ballon d’Or, Cristiano Ronaldo opened January 2017 by beating Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann in the Best FIFA Men’s Player award votes.

The award puts the icing on the cake of what has been an incredible year for the 31-year-old forward. Having helped his club and country to European championship glories, this recognition was almost inevitable.

Those collective titles, backed by some jaw-dropping statistics throughout the year 2016, saw the ex-Man United man scoop almost all the major awards, with his fourth Ballon d’Or and UEFA’s Best Player of The Year being the highlights at individual level.

The Real Madrid all-time goalscorer edged his closest rival Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann to the very first edition of FIFA’s platinum-plated trophy. American Carli Lloyd won the award category’s female equivalent.

Although the votes were nearly contested between the two rivals, Ronaldo trumped Messi by a considerable margin. The winner was decided by votes from managers and national team captains which made up 50% of the total votes. The other 50% was equally split between fans through an online voting poll on FIFA’s official website and a select group of media representatives from across the globe.

All voters had to choose their top three. The first place is awarded with five points, the second place is worth three and the third place snatches one point. Out of the total number of votes, Cristiano Ronaldo chalked up a total of 34.54%. Messi followed with 26.42% while Antoine Griezmann finished far behind the legendary duo with 7.53% of the votes.

The remaining 31.51% were shared between 20 different players. Barcelona’s Neymar da Silva and Luis Suarez occupied the fourth and fifth positions with 6.23% and 5.11% respectively.
