Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira has opened up about his first encounter with Cristiano Ronaldo after joining Real Madrid in 2010.
The pair met in the UEFA Champions League final not too long ago, where a brace by the Portuguese superstar aided Los Blancos to a 4:1 win over the German’s current side. Nevertheless, Khedira is no new person considering he played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo for five years before joining the Bianconeri in 2015 on a free-transfer.
The 30-year-old midfielder had a trophy-laden stint with the Spanish capital club; winning one La Liga, two Copa del Rey titles, one Supercopa de Espana, the UEFA Champions League, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking exclusively to GQ Magazine, Sami Khedira made some revelations regarding his first-ever face-to-face encounter with Cristiano Ronaldo.
“He is a phenomenon.
“A footballer who people will be talking about for generations because he is doing the extraordinary and has been breaking records for years.
“One will always remember Cristiano Ronaldo because of his class and, of course, because of his egocentricity.
“But as a man, he is special and in the most positive sense.
“I was 23 years old when I moved from VfB Stuttgart to Real Madrid. Everything was exciting.
“Suddenly I was at the most prestigious club in the world.
“At first, I felt like a little boy in a dream world.
“I arrived there and only had this public image of Cristiano. The image of the arrogant, unapproachable and cool self-portrayer.
“Until that day, I only knew him based on what I saw on TV.
“We had never played against each other before and had never crossed paths.
“I sat on the team bus; I think it was the first official training with the entire team when we met for the first time.
“I was new, not quite a known player and, therefore, very reserved and shy.
“Cristiano entered the bus, came straight to me and greeted me with a hand.
“He welcomed me warmly and offered his support: If I had any questions or need help, he said, I should address him at any time.
“I thought: Wow! Cool guy. I did not expect that on the first day from any player and least by Cristiano Ronaldo. A positive surprise.
“Cristiano is not arrogant, he is a very private guy.
“But he is a superstar who does not want to lose even in the smallest competition.
“And therefore, every detail controls and drives himself, as well as his fellow human beings to perfection.”
