On this day in 2007, Cristiano Ronaldo made a very ballsy goal bet with his former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The Portuguese winger who managed to score 17 times in 34 outings in the Premier League in the previous season and had a total tally of 23 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions, had enough reason to believe that he will pass the 20 goal mark in the 2007/2008 season.
“I’ll shave my hair off if I don’t score 20 Premier League goals — you shave your hair off if I do,” the iconic number 7 told the legendary Scot.
Interestingly, that was not the first time Cristiano Ronaldo had challenged his boss. The Madeira-born superstar won a £400 bet with Fergie when he netted his 17 goals as he had initially proposed that he will score more than 15 in the premiership in the 2006/2007 season.
Ronaldo, eventually, shaved off his hair but it was not until he won a back-to-back UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid in 2017. Regarding his bet with Ferguson in 2007, he went on to score 31 goals in 34 appearances and a record 42 goals in 49 matches across all competitions.
His performance for the Red Devils won them the English Premiership, as well as the club’s first Champions League trophy since their dramatic victory over Bayern Munich at Camp Nou in 1999.
In case you are wondering about Sir Alex Ferguson’s hair, well, it’s been 10 years since the bet with Ronaldo but he still has the same haircut he’s had since becoming the manager of Man United in 1986. You didn’t think he will shave it all off, did you?
