Has Cristiano Ronaldo already won FIFA’s The Best?

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi at FIFA.

Mundo Deportivo’s Francesc Aguilar thinks so!

The reporter for the Barcelona-based news outlet believes Cristiano Ronaldo has edged Lionel Messi to land FIFA’s inaugural “The Best” award, come January 9, 2017. Having leaked France Football Magazine’s Ballon d’Or results days before CR7’s coronation, this piece of information seems credible.

Mundo Deportivo‘s Francesc Aguilar claims Cristiano Ronaldo will scoop the Best FIFA Men’s Player award by a narrow margin, unlike in the case of the Ballon d’Or earlier this month where Cristiano Ronaldo absolutely crushed Lionel Messi and the rest; the 31-year-old Portuguese forward secured more than half the figure his runner-up Lionel Messi collected from the total votes to win the golden ball.

The journalist’s claim that the gap is tight is explained by the fact that the voting was absolutely free and not restricted to a selection of journalists only. As such a large portion of fans, coaches and players alike may have actually opted for Messi over Ronaldo, if individuality is to be considered.

The writer also goes on to state that if FIFA were to extend the voting process like they “scandalously did in favor of Ronaldo” ahead of the 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or announcement, then Lionel Messi would edge Cristiano in the race for The Best.

What Mr. Aguilar might have forgotten is that Adidas Golden Ball winner Cristiano Ronaldo has beaten his rival Lionel Messi on every level in 2016, be it collectively or individually.

Even in a game where Ronaldo wasn’t at his best, he won his one-on-one duel against Messi (and could have actually gotten a couple of penalty goals if the referee hadn’t wrongly allowed Mascherano and Rakitic to escape with their fouls):

In a sense, this ambiguity isn’t much of a surprise as Mundo Deportivo is Catalonia-based and hence very likely biased to console supporters of Barcelona’s number 10 icon.

Both are legends but UCL topscorer Cristiano Ronaldo is the king of 2016!

The Champions League triumph with Real Madrid, Euro 2016 glory with Portugal, and the UEFA Player of The Year award that came with it, as well as the recent Ballon d’Or to name a few appear to have tipped the scale in CR7’s favor. Last Sunday’s amazing FIFA Club World Cup hat-trick show, and his eventual win to scoop the tournament’s best player trophy, was just the icing on the cake.

No disrespect to Francesc Aguilar but the stats speak for themselves. If Mundo Deportivo’s report is indeed true, then congratulations to Cristiano Ronaldo in advance! What a year it’s been!
