Real Madrid vs Granada preview

La Liga table ahead of Week 17.

Los Blancos are yet to lose a game this season as they are still unbeaten in 39 games across all competitions. A win over Granada on Saturday will extend Real Madrid’s lead to six points over second-placed Barcelona, who are in a slump having lost 2:1 against nine-men Athletic Bilbao on Thursday in the Copa Del Rey. The Catalans face a tricky test as they travel to El Madrigal to lock-horns with fourth-placed Villarreal.

Speaking of tricky tests, Real Madrid may be in a bit of a sticky situation themselves regarding their squad depth. The 11-time Champions League winners have lost a handful of their star names to injuries.

Pepe, Lucas Vazquez, Matteo Kovacic and Gareth Bale will be unavailable to feature in the game on Saturday. Meanwhile, Sergio Ramos will miss the game through suspension.

However, one player invigorated for the game is Real Madrid attacking powerhouse Cristiano Ronaldo. The prolific talisman was unused in Los Blancos’ 3-0 Copa del Rey win over Sevilla on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old is quite crucial to his team’s aspiration of winning the league for the first time since 2012. As such, his fitness is being closely monitored to avoid any unwanted setbacks associated to his aging knee or muscles.

After being named in UEFA’s Team of The Year for a record 11th time, CR7 will be looking to build on this landmark and fire his side to victory. It’s been quite a lengthy vacation for the four-time Ballon d’Or winner in La Liga.

The last Spanish Primera Division game in which he was fielded in for Real Madrid was the 1:1 draw in El Clasico, way back on December 3. Ronaldo, who is the league’s third-highest goalscorer with ten goals, was then rested in the 3:2 victory over Deportivo La Coruna before the all-whites traveled to Japan for the FIFA Club World Cup.

This season, resting Cristiano Ronaldo has proven to be smart. Hopefully, Saturday’s opening game against struggling Granada will be no different.

Lucas Alcaraz’s side have failed to win 16 of their last 17 matches in La Liga. To add more salt to their wounds, history favors Zidane’s side as the league leaders have won their last six matches against Granada in all competitions.

This includes a 9-1 rout in April 2015 — a game in which Cristiano Ronaldo netted 5 times! The forward’s tally against the Andalusian side counts eleven goals in eight outings. Granada have a real test on their hands to slow down Real Madrid’s title-chasing momentum on Saturday.
