No Cristiano Ronaldo during September’s international break. The recovering superstar was omitted from Portugal’s squad by coach Fernando Santos.
The recently-crowned European kings are set to face minnows Gibraltar on Friday, September 1st. The venue for this friendly match is the Estadio de Bessa in Porto.
The home crowd is expected to witness a flood of goals as Santos warms up his men for the big task at hand: the Seleção’s first competitive match since lifting the UEFA European Championship trophy against all the odds on July 10. Indeed, the UEFA World Cup qualifiers begin on September 4th and Portugal’s campaign kicks off on September 6th.
Without the presence of captain Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal will be handed a tough task away to Switzerland on Matchday 1 of the European WCQs. Luckily for the Portuguese team, however, the Swiss side will also be missing a key player in the form of Xherdan Shaqiri who is carrying a calf injury.
Hungary, Latvia, Andorra and the Faroe Islands are the other teams in Portugal’s World Cup qualifying section, Group B.
