Why Ronaldo’s 401st goal was dubbed as his 400th

Cristiano Ronaldo scores 401st goal vs Sevilla

On Sunday Cristiano Ronaldo scored Real Madrid’s second goal in their La Liga clash with Sevilla but was it the striker’s 400th or 401st for the capital club?

The confusion surrounding the actual number of goals dates back to September 2010. Real Madrid traveled away to Real Sociedad in a league match. There, a Cristiano Ronaldo free kick which was clearly bound for goal deflected off the back of compatriot Pepe and ended up beating the opposition goalkeeper.

The goal sealed a 2:1 victory for Los Blancos and the strike was recognized by the club as Ronaldo’s, although official records state otherwise. Ronaldo’s hat-trick versus Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final helped him to the 400 goal milestone.

Therefore, going by the numbers of Real Madrid, which we at C. Ronaldo Daily believe are accurate, the latest strike against Sevilla is the iconic number 7’s 401st since he joined the Spanish club in 2009.

Here is a summary of Ronaldo’s numbers in his journey so far:

  • Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 401 goals in 391 appearances for Real Madrid
  • In his 196 games at the Santiago Bernabeu, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 218 goals
  • 175 goals out the 401 have been scored in 187 games away from home
  • 8 goals have been scored by Ronaldo in 8 games on neutral grounds
  • 281 goals of the 401 goals have been scored in La Liga, 88 in the UEFA Champions League, 22 in the Copa del Rey, 4 in the FIFA Club World Cup, 3 in the Spanish Supercopa and 2 in the UEFA Super Cup.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo has scored against 60 different opponents for Real Madrid
  • Sevilla is the club to have conceded the most goals off the boots the Portuguese forward (24 goals in 17 games). Atletico Madrid (21 in 29 games) and Getafe (20 goals in 12 games) follow suit respectively.
