Cristiano Ronaldo’s home island of Madeira is in line to be honored at the 2017 World Travel Awards.
The Portuguese island has been nominated for Europe’s Leading Island Destination in the 24th edition of the annual World Travel Awards event. The awards tend to support, promote and develop the global travel and tourism industry by identifying and rewarding excellence and inspiring its practitioners to continually raise the standards of their product and service offering.
This year, Madeira is among 10 other nominees namely Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Crete, Greece, Cyprus, Guernsey and Jersey in the Channel Islands, Malta, Sardinia, and Sicily vying for the prestigious accolade. Despite all the aforementioned destinations being hot-spots for tourists, the development of Cristiano Ronaldo’s home island over the past few years cannot be overemphasized.
Thanks to the 32-year-old football icon, the archipelago boasts of a Cristiano Ronaldo customized museum and a plush Pestana-CR7 hotel. Furthermore, the four-time Ballon d’Or winner’s branded footwear is also manufactured on the Portuguese island. In all, the CR7 brand has been quite influential in the economic prosperity of his home island.
One significant scenario is the fact that his establishment, the Museu CR7, has attracted over 250,000 visitors since it’s opening in 2013! Taking all of these into consideration, it isn’t the least surprising that the island’s airport has been renamed after him.
In regards to the World Travel Awards, an online poll is currently underway for the global audience to partake in. Per the rules of the voting process, a standard vote carries a weighting of one, while votes cast by verified travel professionals carry a weighting of two.
