Tagged as favorites for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, Portugal were denied entry into the final by Chile on penalties. A 2-1 win against Mexico offered the current European champions the bronze medal at the eight-team tourney played in Russia. The Portuguese captain took an early leave and did not feature in the third-place game.

Just as in the 2018 UEFA World Cup qualifiers’ Group B, the Portuguese national team finds itself behind Switzerland. A win against the Faroe Islands in the European WCQs might positively change Portugal’s fortunes in the September 2017 FIFA Ranking. The 89th-placed Landsliðið will face Ronaldo’s side on August 31.
