Cristiano relaxes on the bench in a match

The Portuguese icon is still battling full fitness after enjoying a long pre-season vacation.

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has named his line-up for the Supercopa de Espana first leg clash and guess whose name is out? Cristiano Ronaldo! This will be the second consecutive occasion where the 32-year-old forward starts a game from the dugout this season.

CR7 was an 83rd minute substitute for Real Madrid in their UEFA Super Cup win against Manchester United in Skopje, Macedonia.

Ronaldo’s omission explains Zinedine Zidane’s plans with such a long season ahead. With the return fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu in mind, the Frenchman prefers having his talisman uninvolved for 90 minutes. Super sub strategy; Zidane might summon his leader to the battle field late in the game.

Just as in the UEFA Super Cup fixture, Spanish midfielder Isco will fill his starting spot. The 25-year-old will team up with Cristiano’s usual attack partners Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale up front.

Real Madrid’s lineup for El Clasico:

Barcelona’s starting squad has Lionel Messi as their main man. The Argentine will try to challenge for Ballon d’Or bragging rights as Ronaldo starts from the sidelines. Indeed, when the cat is away, the mouse tries to jubilate.
