Team news and match preview

Portugal enters the upcoming encounter on the back of a 0-0 draw against Belgium. The Seleccao has failed to record a single win in their last three games, drawing two and losing via a 3-0 scoreline to the Netherlands. Thursday’s clash with Algeria, however, could serve up a different narrative with talisman and skipper of the side Cristiano Ronaldo returning.

The 33-year-old forward featured in Monday’s training session after being amiss in his country’s last two friendlies. His absence was simply due to the fact that he was given some time off after leading Real Madrid to a third successive Champions League title under Zinedine Zidane. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner contributed 15 goals in his team’s quest to glory and he is expected to find his scoring boot yet again with the World Cup just around the corner.

That withstanding, Cristiano Ronaldo is gearing up for another major competition with doubts surrounding his future at Real Madrid for the second time running. Following his side’s win of this season’s UEFA Champions League, the Madeira-born star hinted departing the club after declaring that “it was very beautiful” to have played with the Spanish giants.

The situation shares a lot of similarities with when the former Manchester United declared his intention to leave after being accused of tax fraud ahead of the Confederations Cup in 2017. All in all, the situation is not expected to cause any distractions in the Portuguese camp with Cristiano set to sort out his future before the commencement of the World Cup.

For Algeria, there is nothing to worry about as far as preparation for Russia 2018 is concerned considering they failed to secure a spot in the African qualifiers. The Desert Warriors, however, will aim to return to winning ways as soon as possible having tasted defeats in all the last three outings.

Portugal vs Algeria head-to-head

The upcoming encounter between Portugal and Algeria is the first of its kind across all competition. And, although Fernando Santos’ men may not be in the best shape looking back at their performances in recent games, they are expected to get one over their African opposition in order to significantly boost the morale in camp.
