It was a sight to behold in Portugal’s opening match against Spain as 33-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo bagged a hat-trick to earn a point for his country’s in the epic 3-3 draw. The major highlight of the game, of course, was the late free-kick goal which only validated the theory that Portugal can be a force to reckon with at the World Cup this year due to their reluctance to give up.
For Cristiano, knowing that this could possibly be his last appearance on the world stage for the Seleccao, the objective will be to put in similar performances as each game comes by. He currently tops the goalscorers’ leaderboard with three goals and his eventful night against La Roja ensured that he became the first European to score in nine successive major international tournaments.
Despite all the positives mostly girdling around the Seleccao skipper, Portugal cannot deny the inevitable fact that their defense in their last encounter was generally shambolic. Fernando Santos’ first choice center back pair Pepe and Jose Fonte showed a high level of weakness against Spain which resulted in the Euro 2016 winners conceding three goals.
As a result, Morocco’s Herve Renard will look to draft a plan to exploit the vulnerability to his side’s advantage. The Frenchman is poised to make an actual statement of intent after seeing his North African side defeated via an agonizing late own-goal in their opening group game with minnows Iran.
They will, however, have to pull off the unimaginable against Spain and Portugal to stand a chance of qualifying to the next round. Prior to meeting Iran, the Moroccans managed an unbeaten 18-game run and will hope they can draw inspiration from it ahead of Wednesday’s daunting encounter.
