And La Furia Roja was the Portuguese icon's victim. Cristiano Ronaldo is the third Portuguese footballer to net a goal against Spain at European Championship of World Cup level. He follows the likes of Nuno Gomes at Euro 2004 and Antonio de Sousa at Euro 1984.  On Friday night in Sochi, Madeira's most popular and influential man stretched his unique achievement of scoring in consecutive major international tournaments to nine. It took him only four minutes to do so from the spot after the referee judged he'd been fouled in the penalty box. So what are these eight previous competitions in which CR7 has engraved his name as a goalscorer? and how many strikes did he get in each of those? Let's take you down the memory lane. Since 2006: Never a World Cup without a Ronaldo goal Cristiano Ronaldo is playing in his fourth World Cup and he's scored at least one goal in each of them. The first time he did so was against Iran in Germany 2006. Figo was the Portuguese national team's penalty taker, back then. However, he assigned his future successor. The latter made no mistake. And when he was done, the emotion he felt was so intense that he fell on his knees and screamed his joy to the sky with tears in his eyes. In the quarter-finals against England, Ronaldo took the decisive spot-kick to send England packing; but goals in penalty shoot-outs are not recorded in scoring charts.  In South Africa 2010, CR7 knocked in Portugal's sixth goal from their 7-0 trouncing of North Korea in the group stages. The Iberians, unfortunately, exited the tournament in the Last 16.  At the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the Euro 2004 hosts suffered a worse journey as they went home after only three matches. The last of those saw Cristiano net the winning goal in a consolation victory over Ghana.  In total, Ronaldo entered Russia 2018 with three goals in three World Cup experiences. Remarkably, by half-time in the opening match, he had already matched two-thirds of his World Cup career tally. Four straight European Championship appearances, nine goals This achievement adds up to the 33-year-old's excellent goalscoring record at the continental level. In the European Championship where he boasts a trophy, Ronaldo has done wonders since the age of 19. He scored twice in his major international tournament debut (one against Greece and one against the Netherlands) as Portugal hosted Euro 2004. He went on to score a solitary goal against the Czech Republic at Euro 2008 -- a tournament which was tainted by his unfortunate leg injury and increasing fatigue following a long season with ex-club Manchester United.  In Euro 2012, Ronaldo finished the tournament tied on three goals alongside fellow topscorers Italy's Mario Balotelli, Russia's Alan Dzagoev, Germany's Mario Gomez, Croatia's Mario Mandzukic and eventual champion Fernando Torres. Two of CR7's trio of goals came against the Netherlands in a do-or-die Matchday 3 fixture. The final one came in the quarter-finals against the Czechs. The 1-0 score line was enough to send the Seleccao into the semi-finals where he did not even had the chance to execute his spotkick as Portugal lost in penalties to the Spaniards.  Four years later, the best captain in the world provided the necessary means to send his country into the final of Euro 2016 where they beat hosts France to lay their hands on the trophy. Again, his tally stopped at three goals: a life-saving brace against Hungary to qualify from the group stages, and a powerful strike to down Wales in the semis. He will be remembered for offering his Silver Boot to then vice-captain Nani.  The FIFA Confederations Cup made it eight! After making it four consecutive UEFA European Championships in which he put his name on the scoring sheet, Cristiano did the same at his first ever FIFA Confederations Cup participation. He extended his record to eight consecutive competitions against hosts Russia before adding one more goal against minnows New Zealand.  Cristiano Ronaldo simply gets better with age, it seems!
