Matchday 8 of the 2018/19 Italian Serie A season will see the Old Lady face Udinese at the Stadio Friuli in what will be the second fixture of the day on Saturday, October 6. With second-placed Napoli in action only on Sunday, Juventus would open a nine-point gap atop the table if they maintain their record-setting perfect start.
For Cristiano Ronaldo, the game will mark his first this month since he was suspended from his club’s 3-0 win to Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League, last Tuesday. The iconic number 7 forward will want to build upon the momentum he set on the previous matchday as he played a pivotal role in Juve’s 3-1 comeback against Carlo Ancelotti’s outfit.
Having been granted the right to miss Portugal’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Poland on October 11 and their friendly against Scotland on October 14, CR7 is poised to display an energized performance against Udinese this weekend. On top of his desire to add more goals to the three which he currently counts, the father-of-four may also want to make a bold statement in the midst of the Kathryn Mayorga rape claims saga.
“I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in,” Ronaldo tweeted on Wednesday.
“Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.”
He followed up that tweet immediately with another one, insisting:
“My clear conscious will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations.”
Since then, however, sponsors EA Sports and Nike have released statements in which they underline following the case closely. It is not uncommon for top celebrities to be deserted by their biggest sponsors in such times. While it is still too early in the saga for Ronaldo to panic, do not be surprised if he channels his frustration upon Udinese. The latter conceded six goals in what ended into an eight-goal thriller, the last time they hosted Juventus.
